Connective Tissue Disorders & Restrictions

What are heritable disorders of connective tissue (HDCT) & EDS?

HDCT are a collection of inherited disorder of the connective tissue. Mutations affect collagen and the way it behaves resulting in tissue hyper-distensibility and fragility. Laxity of ligaments predisopose to joint instability, subluxation, and dislocation. These disorders are multi-system and characterized by involvement of vessels, skin, joints, bone, organs, muscles, and nervous system.

The constellation of disorders in HDCT include Marfan's syndrome, osteogenesis imperfectca, and EDS.

Patient Specific Functional Scale

To obtain a copy of Patient Specific Functional Scale with specific instructions for chronic conditions like hypermobile spectrum disorder, EDS, fascia problems, please submit your email below.

Thanks for submitting!

Patient Specific Functional Scale is a self-reported outcome measure of function. It is a good scale for fascia-based disorders because it allows for patient-centered measures levels of independence and functions [1]. The aim of PSFS is to provide patients with a patient-centered outcome scale that is valid [2], reliable, responsive and efficient [3,4].

Keeping Your Lungs Healthy

Fall transition in the Time of Covid-19

Keeping your lungs healthy

· Lungs are fascia, metabolically active, and an immune tissue.

· Viniyoga breathing exercises will strengthen your respiratory system.

· Air purifiers will help prevent inflammation in the respiratory tract.

Fall is a time of transitions and sensations of fatigue and shortness of breath are typical. Recently, we were able to purchase our own space at 429 N Central Ave, Upland, CA. Although we moved just down the street, the transition has left us winded but grateful that we have a permanent home. This is exemplary of fall- a time of transition that leaves our hearts filled with gratitude. This is also a particularly vulnerable time and our focus needs be on Health.

Immune Health in the Time of COVID-19

In light of COVID19 and it’s huge societal impact, immune health has become a critical topic of interest. Immune health is based largely on inflammatory homeostasis;1 a healthy immune system is balanced, neither hyperactive nor hypoactive. A higher inflammatory load is not just associated with chronic disease. It is also associated with increased susceptibility to viral infection and poor outcome during acute illness.1,2 A balanced immune system in homeostasis is critical to staving off and optimizing recovery from acute illnesses. In this article, we take a dive into the tools that help to modulate a balanced immune state.

We are still in the midst of a global COVID-19 pandemic. As of today, testing is still not readily available and data is still poor. However, data does support that California is doing well and flattening the curve. As a professor and attending physician at a major academic institution, I am called upon to serve in this time of crisis and in the event that California does not do well. Below I have included an excerpt of a manuscript that I have submitted to a leading medical journal regarding rehabilitation of COVID-19 patients.

Key Points

- Practice meticulous hygiene and social distancing.

- The U.S. will likely have significant levels of transmission increase in the next 1-2 weeks that may require quarantine/lock-down measures implemented by the local government.

- We may be in this for the long haul so if you are at low risk, start to think about how to continue your life and tend to necessary tasks while being mindful of the pandemic.

- At Tupelo Pointe, we always sanitize with industrial grade medical cleanser between patients and are even more meticulous about this on frequently used surfaces given the recent pandemic. This is a very low risk environment given the small and exclusive panel of patients in the practice with only 3-4 patients coming through on a given day. If you need to push back upcoming appointments, please do not hesitate to contact me.

- Continue good health practices by taking your vitamins, engaging in clean eating, exercise, and sleep. If you are out of vitamins or want to switch to recommended brands, please contact me.

- If you develop cold or flu symptoms, don’t panic. You probably have the common cold and should practice good hygiene to protect others.

- More information is coming out about the SARS-CoV2 virus/COVID-19. There is still a lot we don’t know.
